Some yards survived the August heat wave! Enough that caused me to have to take a second look at a few of your landscapes so that I could choose September 2010 Yard of the Month. I commend those of you on planting the right type of plants that will withstand the heat and still look good. Dr. George Burris II at 1523 McCoy has done just that. Many layers of plantings with multiple colors of blooms and foliage makes this yard have such a great appeal. Cuttings from the potato plants make a great centerpiece as well. And, the up-lighting frames this landscape after dusk for an appealing night view as well. A very nice yard to stroll by and see.

Tip of the month: Plant rye grass seeds toward the end of September to have a green lawn throughout the winter, and a good time to plant shrubs so they can develop a hearty root system over the fall and winter months.
