Remember to be Safe while out Walking

On April 7, a person in police custody escaped from a police squad car and ran loose in our neighborhood before being recaptured by the police.

It gave me a bit of concern for my neighbors who walk for exercise and pleasure after dark in the area.  Our neighborhood is safe, but we must be alert and on guard to protect ourselves.

A reasonable amount of caution will serve you well.  Here are some tips to enhance your personal safety:

  • Remain alert and aware of your surroundings and other people in the area,
  • Carry your cell phone and keep it handy for a quick call to 911,
  • Carry pepper spray.  It can be an effective, inexpensive deterrent, allowing you a few minutes to get away.  Pepper spray can be purchased at Walmart, Target and online,
  • Finally, don’t ignore your instincts.  When the hairs on the back of your neck rise and some situation is giving you a “creepy feeling,” turn and go the other way, head home or call 911.  This is a normal warning response that you should listen to.  Don’t be embarrassed – be safe.

Enjoy our wonderful and safe neighborhood environment!  But please be alert.
