Hinga’s Auto Repair appeared before the City Plan commission on February 4 requesting yet another two-year extension for a special use permit to

continue operating at his location on Ross Avenue.

The zoning code for that area of Ross Avenue was changed in 2005 to exclude auto business such as this one. During the interim, the owner has made no attempt to relocate or sell the property.

Bryan Place NA members, Gary Mitchell, Eric Williamson, Wayne Smith, and I spoke in opposition to the permit. Sharon Smith and Carol Guthrie attended the meeting to lend support. We argued that numerous extensions and 11 years was sufficient time for the owner to recoup his investment and find an alternate business site.

A majority of the Planning Commission voted against approval of the permit. The ruling may or may not go now to the full City Council. If so, we are fairly confident that the Council will also deny the permit. Now room for more development!

Stay tuned.
